National Flag of Iran



A piece of fabric has been chosen as the symbol of mankind’s ethnicity and nationality since the beginning of history. Iran’s history has more than 50 dynasties, governments, imperials, royals, provincials, states, independent and semi-independents with different flags. The idea of flying a flag grew from the requirements of ancient warfare and the battlefields. An emblem such as a shield, animal or religious device was attached to the pole which was used to determine the identity of each country. The Iranian flag was approved on July 29, 1980 .The history of the Iranian flag returns to the Achaemenian dynasty when Cyrus the Great established the First World Empire. It was a golden eagle with spread wings, mounted on a long shaft. Many artistic variations of Iranian flags were made over subsequent decades. A lion with a sword standing before a rising sun and a crown above were demonstrated on the centerpiece of the Iranian flag in the 15th century and it came to be tricolored in the late 19th century. The lion symbolized strength, the sun signifies light, purity and warmth and the crown stands for monarchy. But all traditional flags and banners were changed after the abdication of Mohammad Reza shah in 1979. color
The Iranian national flag is popularly known as Tricolor which means "three Colors".  It is a horizontal tricolor in equal proportions of deep green at the top, white in the middle and red at the bottom. The flag has a width-to-length ratio of 4 to 7 meters. At the center of the white band, the national emblem of the word Allah in the shape of a tulip is engraved which indicates the Islamic Republic. The colors of the flag dates back to the mid-18th century, green symbolizes Iran’s nature and prosperity and also represents Islam, white highlights the importance of maintaining peace and red means courage, which shows Iranian people are ready to fight and defend their homeland.
