When you go to Shiraz, it is extremely hard to miss the
Persepolis. The strange structures, thought to have been built somewhere around
518 BC, is enough to make you question how advanced our early ancestors once
were. Founded by Darius I, Persepolis was the capital of the Achaemenid Empire.
It was built on an immense half-artificial, half-natural terrace, where the
king of kings created an impressive palace complex inspired by Mesopotamian
models. The importance and quality of the monumental ruins make it a unique
archaeological site. In 1979 the ruins were designated a UNESCO World
