Persepolis in Iran

About 60 km from Shiraz, near Marvdasht, Perspolis is the only royal city to offer important vestiges. Persepolis, the ancient capital of the kings of the Achaemenian dynasty of Iran was ounded by Darius I in 518 B.C. It was built on an immense half-artificial, half-natural terrace, where the king of kings created an impressive palace complex inspired by Mesopotamian models. Walking around the ruin is like traveling back in time, through the rich history of the ancient Persian Empire. The statues and wall carvings are very well preserved and as stunning as a ruin can be. Don’t miss this UNESCO World Heritage site which is a must see in Iran.
