Celebrating Yalda night in Iran

Being a culturally rich country, festivals are at the heart of people’s lives in Iran. The numerous and varied festivals that are held throughout the year offer a unique way of seeing Iranian culture at its best. December 21st, Yalda night is an Iranian festival that marks the arrival of winter. Known widely as Shabe chele, it takes place over a night, and is a celebration of the triumph of good over evil.  Listening to grandparents’ ancient and magical stories and reciting Hafez portray are the most well-known rituals of this night. Family and friends get together for fun and happiness and put out different kinds of dried fruits, nuts, seeds and fresh winter fruits each of which is a symbol of health, blessings and happiness. Most important fruits of this Night, are pomegranate and watermelon. Can you guess why our ancestor strongly recommend us to eat a summer fruit as watermelon at this night?
