Pomegranate Festival: the feast of One Hundred Seeds of Ruby

Pomegranate is among the most sacred fruits in Persian culture insofar as the Zoroastrians, planted several pomegranate trees in their fire temples and held their branches as a holy plant in their rituals. The sharp contrast between the ruby red seeds and the deep green leaves, the beautiful shape and most importantly (in my idea) the delighting sweet-sour taste of pomegranate has caused this fruit to be known as a gift from paradise.

Shazde Garden: A Sparkling Emerald on Heart of Desert

Shazde or Prince Garden, one of the most outstanding examples of Persian historical garden, was originally built under the order of the governor of Kerman, during the late Qajar Period. Its location, near Mahan, was selected strategically as it was placed on the route between Bam Citadel and Kerman. The garden’s traditional edifice was embellished with small brooks rushing between green and gigantic trees. The presence of fertile soil, gentle sunshine, mild breeze and most importantly qanats (chain water ditches under the ground), miraculously, has provided the possibility of creating a grassy garden in such a dry area. Shazdeh Garden was registered by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site under the name of the Persian Garden in 2011.

Mehregan: Persian Festival of Autumn

Mehregan or Persian Festival of Autumn, is dedicated to the Zoroastrian deity Mithra, venerated as the Persian goddess of friendship and truth. Mehregan also has mythological roots announcing the victory day of the legendary King Fereydoon over the scandalous King Zahhak. . It used to be an emblematic approach to show Iranians respecting their freedom and resistance against giving up their ancient traditions.
Mehregan is celebrated on the 16th day of the 7th Iranian month, Mehr, at the time of harvest and beginning of winter. This feast would be celebrated for six days, starting on the 08th October (Mehr Rouz) and ending on the 13th October (Raam Rouz).

On the occasion of the festival, the participants celebrate the feast by wearing new colorful clothes and natural perfumes and setting a table of fruits, nuts, and flowers. These traditions are still practiced among Zoroastrians in Iran especially in Yazd.

Azadi Tower of Tehran, a Token of Persian Architecture.

Azadi Tower, a combination of both pre- and post-Islamic architecture, was built in 1971 in commemoration of the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. The architect, Hossein Amanat, had no clue that his quickly arranged outline, which proceed to win the competition, would one day turn into central point of Iranian capital's skyline. This Gateway into Iran was named The Shahyad Tower, signifying "Kings' Memorial", but was dubbed Azadi (Freedom) after the Iranian Revolution of 1979. It is 50 meters (148 ft) high and totally covered with cut marble. The stone walls, the pure lines, and the proportions of the whole building create a purposefully sober environment. Artifacts were chosen from different parts of the nation’s history. For example, at forefront is a duplicate of the Quran and a Declaration of Human Rights.

You can take great photos by just walking around this monument.

The serene and sunny village of Kharanagh.

The historical Kharanagh village is a gem in the heart of the deserts around Yazd with a rich flora and fauna and precious historical heritages. The beautiful village of Kharanagh is almost an unknown and untouched destination laid in the sunny and warm lands of central Iran.

Besides the historical texture of the village including dilapidated walls and aged adobe arcs, the glorious and ancient fortress of Kharanagh is known as the most amazing architectural heritage of this village. Some believe that this castle ages back to Sassanid time and it has been restored and resuscitated for several times during different dynasties. 6 towers and 4 gates surround this castle and about 80 residential houses are located inside the borders of the castle. The houses are known for being laid out twistedly and being constructed by materials which are suitable for the warm and sunny climate of desert lands.

The stone-made bridge of Kharanagh is another heritage that any traveler visits in this village. This bridge is blocked by a hill from one side so it has not been used as a passage but has been a bridge to control the water flow.

September and October are the best months for visiting this scenic village and enjoying its serenity. Take a look at Day Tours of Yazd including a visit to Kharanagh and see what this tour offers.
