Falak-ol Aflak Castle

Situated on top of a large hill in the city of Khorramabad, the old Falak-ol Aflak Castle was built in ancient times, its origin dates back to the Sassanid period. The historical fortress was the main power center of Atabakan, the family that governed Lorestan province between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries. The castle underwent different renovations, especially after the attacks which occurred during the Safavid period. The figure of this imposing fortress reminds of the medieval castles which can be found in Spain. The walls are very high, without any openings and topped with battlements and cylindrical defense towers. In 1977, after being used as a prison until 1968, it was transformed into a museum complex. The museum was closed due to the Iran-Iraq war but reopened in 1991. Specialized in history and archeology before and after the arrival of Islam, it contains interesting collections of gravestones with inscriptions and ceramics.
